LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Little Rock utilized a 17-rebound advantage including a career-high 14 rebounds by
Angelique Francis as the Trojans topped Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 73-63, Tuesday night at the Jack Stephens Center.
Â
The Trojans (2-1) shot 40% or better for the third straight game this season and held a 41-28 halftime lead but it was the 48 rebounds that highlighted Little Rock's first meeting against UAPB since 2005. Francis' 14 rebounds led all players while
Dariel Johnson added 10 boards.
Â
"We won that game because of our rebounding," Little Rock Head Coach
Joe Foley said after the game.
Â
Sali Kourouma once again led the offensive effort for Little Rock, scoring 24 points while also bringing down six offensive rebounds and swiping four steals.
Tia Harvey scored 12 points for the Trojans.
Â
Little Rock led by as much as 16 in the first half before UAPB challenged the Trojans with varying defenses in hopes of throwing the Trojans off-guard. That lead would get trimmed down to as little as six after Khadijah Brown scored a pair of baskets in the lane within 20 seconds of each other, but that would be as close as the Lions would get.
Â
The Trojans responded with a 9-2 run that included a 3-pointer from Harvey to regain a double-digit lead at 48-37 late in the third quarter. With the lead trimmed back to single digits entering the fourth quarter, Little Rock used another 9-2 run to pull away. With the Trojans out-rebounding UAPB 12-6 in the final quarter, the Maroon and Silver kept UAPB at bay to clinch the win.
Â
The Golden Lions (0-3) were led by Brown's 19 points while Zaay Green and Tyeisha Juhan both added 12 points each.
Â
Little Rock continues its three-game homestand on Thursday evening when the Trojans host Memphis.
