Ala.—Despite
cutting the lead to two with 2:29 remaining, the UALR women's basketball team
allowed nine points in the remaining minutes while scoring two to lose 58-49 at
South Alabama Wednesday to open Sun Belt Conference action. Junior Chastity
Reed recorded a season-high 32 points as the Trojans fall to 5-5 overall.
Reed went 14-of-28 from
the field and 4-of-5 from the free throw line to lead all scorers and scored 65
percent of the Trojans points. She also
recorded eight rebounds.
Junior Shanika Butler recorded 11 points and
eight rebounds, while sophomore Marian
Kursh led the team with nine rebounds.
South Alabama (5-5, 1-0
SBC) was led by Shakira Nettles and Tashley Gaines who each had 16 points. Gaines also recorded a double-double with ten
rebounds.
For the game, the Jaguars
out rebounded the Trojans 42-34 and outscored the team from the bench
25-0. Both teams forced turnovers with
UALR matching the team's season-high with 17, while USA tied the team's
season-high with 18.
The Jaguars held UALR to
the team's lowest scoring in the first half as the Trojans only recorded 15
points to USA's 28. UALR outscored USA
in the second half 34-30.
Reed opened the half with
a jumper before South Alabama tied the score with 17:51 on the clock. After both teams scored baskets, USA took the
team's first lead at the 15:20 mark on a layup by Gaines.
USA extended the lead to
three, before UALR regained the advantage with 8:25 until the half on a jumper
by Reed.
The Jaguars held the
Trojans to no points for over four minutes while recording seven to take the
17-11 lead. After a layup by Kursh, USA
ended the half on an 11-2 run.
South Alabama opened the
second half on a 5-0 run taking the team's biggest lead of 18 points, before
two free throws by Kursh and a jumper by Reed cut the lead with 17:55
remaining.
With 8:27 on the clock, a
jumper by Reed sparked a 10-0 run by the Trojans to come with two points. After a basket by USA, Reed connected on a
jumper to once again bring the lead to two with 2:29 remaining.
South Alabama ended with a
9-2 run to win 58-49.
UALR continues Sun Belt
Conference action on Saturday as they travel to Jonesboro, Ark. to face
Arkansas State. Tip-off is set for 7:30
